2012 started with a bang.
It's a new year
and
a new project.
The Christmas hoopla was over
and
I
was
ready.
Ready for a project.
Did I tell you about my Christmas gift from my Mr.?
I asked for project time.
Have I told you?
I am a project girl.
I am happiest
when I am smack dab in the middle
of a project...
planning, painting, and doing.
When I have a paintbrush in my hand I have a smile on my face.
Do a project with me and you will have my undying love.
My current project?
My pantry.
I'm not sure this was necessarily
the most important project
to tackle
but
the winds of inspiration are not always logical.
And we must follow the inspiration.
We have spent the week
tearing out, re-installing
and paint, paint, painting.
this is what my pantry looked like most of the time
the L-configuration was not working for me...
I'm too short so I couldn't reach anything in the corner
the paint was crackled and not in a good way
more overflow
do you wonder what is under that countertop?
that will be phase 2
phase one is the main wall
STEP 1: we MY MR. tore out the base cabinets/shelves
which led to this
this has been my kitchen for the week
at about day 3
I start to wonder
"what have I done"
and
" I think I have issues"
at about day 3
I start to wonder
"what have I done"
and
" I think I have issues"
STEP 2: this dresser was in the barn
I found it thrifting with a damaged top
made a new base
and
installed it.
Now, it looks like a built-in
STEP 3: wood countertop
(a scrap piece that was in the barn, too)
STEP 4: sand off years of globbed-on old paint,
put beadboard in the back of the shelves,
build new shelves for the base
put beadboard in the back of the shelves,
build new shelves for the base
STEP 5: paint
this is my first time using this new paint
it's a hybrid oil
it's water base and it's oil base
don't ask me how that works
it was easy to apply like water-base...
we will see if it has the durability of oil
STEP 6:hardware
the part I imagined and could NOT wait for
STEP 7: put it all back together
I am in the battle of beauty vs. function
Iwant it all to be cute
I know this battle well.
For now, I will let the countertop be cute and functional
and what happens behind closed doors...
well, stays behind closed doors.
cost of project
dresser: $24
countertop: free
paint- $28
hardware-$40
baseboard moulding-$6.00
total:$98.00
all of this for under $100.00!
plus glass canisters from Wal-Mart
*****
tip: this was the right size jar for balance
but
that is a lot of rice
I put in an empty tupperware in the jar first
and then poured in rice around it
ok...I lied...I couldn't help it...
I still (partially) decorated the inside of the shelves
I still have a lots of details to finish.
I need to complete phase 2
to see if everything will have a place.
I still have some purtify-ing to do.
But I am pleased as punch with the results so far.
Merry Christmas to me.

Oh my...that has to put a smile on your face every time you look at it! And such a large space for a pantry. I really like how you used things you already have. That old, inexpensive dresser gives it so much detail. Amazing transformation.

That's your pantry? Girl...that's the size of my whole kitchen. I'm such a pansy, I can't even begin to think about taking on that size of a project. It is perfect and I love how you can "see" with your mind what you need and what you have.

What a stunning space! I'd be over-the-moon happy to have that kind of a space in my home. My "pantry" is a closet, yes you read right, a closet at the end of my hallway! Hahahaha, but it's o.k. and serves it's purpose and I'm thankful to have it!
Beautiful job....:).

OMg girl what a great transformation , love it and so darn smart to use that dresser , never would have thought about that. Of course having a handy man never hurts either because I am not good with a hammer or screwdriver. I did teach myself to paint last year LOl

Oh, did you remember to put the milk away? (it was left on the counter with all the clutter)...hehehe
Wow!!! What an awesome transformation. I love it:-) Can I ask where you got the rings that attach to the fabric? I love the look and I want to add a burlap curtain around my little table that I use as an island so I can store things underneath. I would never have thought to transform a dresser into kitchen cabinets. I am pinning this and sending your blog entry to my daughter/blog partner. I am spending next week at her house to paint kitchen cabinets, and this idea would so work on one side of the room. Where did the countertops come from? They are great!!!
Where did you get that great hardware??
Absolutely, teetotally have pantry envy. I would have taken the "before." But, oh my do I heart the After! You did an amazing job. I love all the details, especially the hardware.

Gilda
fabulous!!! totally and completely fabulous!
Oh I absolutely love how your pantry turned out. Isn't it exciting to see your vision come to life.
Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving your sweet comment. It has been a while since I have posted anything? Hopefully, will post soon, I keep doing projects but forget to take pictures.
I am absolutely in love with your cabinets and counter tops. The counter tops are genius. Had I seen this earlier, there is no way I would have had granite. A country kitchen is what I wanted in the first place. The dresser is totally perfect in your kitchen...I am going to change out my drawer knobs to pulls like yours. Excellent kitchen...pinned!!!
Repurposing the old dresser into a built-in in your pantry is absolute GENIUS!! You would totally never know that those charming drawers ever held socks and undies! Wow!!!
What a wonderful idea! I love what you've done with your cabinets and I love your creativity!
This is a fascinating transformation! Very GENIUS! Love it.

Miss Gracie,
Appears you and YOUR MR. have done a fabulous make~over in your pantry area! Bravo! I adore the use of a dresser turned cabinet and those drawer pulls are gorgeous! Enjoy the fruits of your labors!!!
Fondly,
Pat
What an amazing transformation - it looks like you spent 1000's. Love the dresser as a cupboard - would never have thought of that!
Oh wow, what a job, you two did a fabulous job and yeah, I love your hardware AND FOR UNDER $100!! Thanks for sharing.
FABBY
Rene,
This is excellent. I am so with you on the way to a girls heart. I also struggle with the beauty vs function dilema. I wish I had a pantry that big to fix up. Your pantry looks like my kitchen!
Lisa
Wow! Incredible. You and Mr. G are a magnificent combination. It took me 5 months to finish a kitchen, not real wood, and I willnot tell you how much, 2 contractors, and Home Depot designer-need I say more? Take a peek if you'd like. I love it, but I love, love, love yours. No, I'm not coveting. I'm thankful for a renovation after 27 years of waiting.
WOW! WOW! WOW! That is amazing! I love every bit of it!!! :)
Merry Christmas to you is RIGHT!
~Liz
Just popped over from the Primp party and I love, love, love it! Tell us more about your little curtain!

Angie @ Knick of Time
This is seriously SO cute! One of the greatest DIY makeovers I've seen... really love how it turned out! Can't wait to see what else you come up with. Those drawers with the hardware...wow! Anyway, I'm a new follower and so happy to have found your great blog!
Your kitchen is beautiful and I love the idea of using the old dresser as built in cupboards. You have done an amazing amount of work on your beautiful home. Two of our daughters bought old homes that had been vacant for a few years and we helped them restore them so I know how much work goes into it but it is fun too to see them come along.
Congrats on a new little granddaughter this spring.
Take care,
Carolyn
Hello, this is my first visit to your site. I love what you have done with your pantry. I got alittle scared when you tore out those lower cabinets and just had the dresser there. But, what your Mr. did with that dresser looks like it has always been there. Great job! I am curious though....what's behind the curtain?? I'll be back!
It is gorgeous! Love the wooden top and the hardware! Thank you for joining me at Home Sweet Home!
Sherry
