got chairs?

My collection of pressed-back chairs
 found thrifting

I have been hoarding saving  my favorites
to replace the white reproduction chairs
in my dining room.

I love the details.
I love the wood, warm and worn.
I love that they don't match.

It's true , just a few years back
these would have been headed to my paint booth
for a coat of white paint.

But times are a-changin',
Now
it's all about white paint AND wood .
Together.
These will stay like they are
just a little seat fix-up.

Whew, it's a good thing that my stuff is the last to get painted.

Thanks for all of your input on the woodwork!
I know it was a bit controversial
but
since we don't talk politics
we need something
every now and then
to stir the pot.
(grin)
My Mr. and I had great fun reading through them all.

The tally is:
Paint, we love paint: 23
Don't you dare paint :  21
Follow your heart:  6
I'm in the same boat as you:  2

You gals are  lots of help, aren't you?!

Great chairs! Love them all lined up like that!

These may not exactly match, but in a school worksheet a child would mark them as similar or in a category . Love them and look forward to seeing their renewal,

Too funny! Once again, I'm in the same boat as you. I've got 6 mismatched chairs like yours that I've been hesitant to paint. I've decided to lighten up the walls and maybe paint the table legs, but leave the chairs alone. Although I think I'll update my 1990 chair cushions. :@

Hahaha, I love that the woodwork tally is so close! Too funny.
Also, I have a vast collection of chairs too, 15 in my whole teeny little house. It's a sickness I tell you!

ohmygoodness, seeing all those chairs bring back memories of my grandparents dining room. the pressed wood chairs and a massive table. Love them the natural way!!

I agree with Robin and Pam. I have several pieces of dark wood antiques that I will never paint. Dark wood and white are meant to be together. Love the chairs!

LOL- I love the results of your poll. It will be interesting to see what you decide. I love all your mismatched chairs. It will be fun to see them in place. So...you ARE or AREN'T painting them?;>) Care to start a poll? xo Diana

I think that patina is toooo beautiful and it's time that creates it...I would leave most of the doors and trim alone. The hutch I would paint the inside to highlight the rich wood patina. The stair case I would paint the step and leave the riser wood,I migh even do the spindles and leave rail wood. A touch of both but the wood standing out. Love the house you are so lucky to live in this rich history.

I love your house. I suddenly decided to go "the other way", white. I love it. Love all the chairs.

Oh I love your chairs. So much character to add to your dining room. I can't believe we gave up a set of 6 caned seat pressed back chairs early in our marriage. I thought they were too old looking. How my thought have changed over the years. Hang on to your collection no matter what the style is. They are beautiful!

Love, love, love all your chairs. I would not touch them! They look great just the way they are. Blessings!

If they were mine I would leave them, but my table would be all white & the chairs would have white seat covers...Stop by for a visit when you get a chance....Blessings Lori

I love those chairs! I love the mix of woods! I wouldn't change a thing about them either.

Love the chairs just as they are. I have a couple of them myself with wicker seats. And I was one of the commenters who said that white and wood go well together...it's a beautiful timeless combo and I for one never tire from looking at it. I did my kitchen in 1993 with off white doors and knobs and marble benchtops with silky oak front trim....still looks fantastic. oh and my black St George stove. I'm in Australia.

I love the chairs just the way they are.....old wood is beautiful.......and I love the mix of paint and wood, much more interesting........when you have new or newer, I like paint to add interest, but, with old wood it already has history.

Love those chairs - and I also love that they don´t match. They are just perfect.

That's funny...I was wondering how all of the input would be on to paint or not to paint. Any decisions yet? I love all of your chairs...very cool! ~Stacy~ xo

Love your chairs! I've been in love with pressed-back chairs since I first saw them in antique shops in the l970's. Recently, I changed out my original set of four for a set of six.

Hi Sweetie
Love love love the chairs... and I would never paint them :) As far as your house trim controversy I myself like a light house. Living in an old house I know how dark some of the rooms can be. I didn't have to make that choice because all my woodwork is painted. Funny, when I moved in the house 22 years ago I started stripping the woodwork only to find fir. Coming from Mn I had the mindset that it would be some exotic wood. Not in IL, but what was really cool was they had an artist come in and faux paint all the woodwork to look like an expensive wood. I don't know who the idiot was that painted over it the first time but there are so many layers over the original artwork now that it will stay linen white... I say paint it!
Blessings this beautiful Sunday

I like your idea of leaving them the way that they are... against your house they look like a classic painting! I meant to comment on your last post but must have gotten pulled away from the computer (literally) We have old original trim and I did paint the dining room because it was kinda beat up and I love it but I promised Duane that I would not paint the rest of the downstairs trim, it has been the same for over 100years so I will just work around it. I am hoping that when I paint my walls white the trim will really pop! t.xoxox

I adore your old pressback chairs. I would love to have four of those! They look wonderful all lined up like that.

I love the chairs-painted or not. I sometimes like the table painted white and distressed and the chairs to remain as is. Either way, I love your style, your heart, your blog. You are truly beautiful in all you do, so there, do what your heart desires.

I can paint anything in this house except for the woodwork. It has been a 13 year long battle that I am still losing! I love painted woodwork and don't think it de-values an old house at all. I can't wait to see what you decide...if you paint it, I'll be showing it off to my husband. :)
and your collection of chairs is AMAZING! I wouldn't paint those for anything. xo

How about this...gorgeous either way! I guess if the patina is pretty just let them shine. They look terrific in the photos! Can't wait to see what you do with them.

Love those chairs as they are or painted and chipped. I have a few the same that were my mothers and kept them natural for years, then I put on a bit of white paint and sanded back and love them like this for a change. In a few years they will probably go back to natural. :)

The chairs are gorgeous just at they are....I really appreciate being able to see the detail in the woodwork and how the patina really adds interest to that detail. I can envision crisp, linen or even patterned fabric like fretwork in blue and white or green and white for seat covers. That would mix mod with vintage. I'm very curious to see what you do.

I just came across your post. One more for same boat as you! I just bought my first chair (of this type) this week for 12.99 at Goodwill. I have also asked for feedback about whether to paint it or not.... Now that I see your collection, I am going to have to find some more! I will check back to see what you decide :).

I just found your blog trying to get ideas on how to fix my chairs that look exactly like these. They look terrible. The wood is in pretty good shape, but the middle where it is upholstered looks AWFUL! It is a foam? seat with fabric over it and some kind of tacks to hold it around the edges. I can't seem to find anything on how to redo them. Any tips or links? How do you plan to redo the middle seat parts?
