killing two birds with one post...

I'm going to share a post from 2 years ago.
I think it  fits with the pinterest debate that is going around
as well
as showing you one of my Valentine celebrations.
There are fewer calories
if
we revisit the post
rather
than
re-creating the decoration!
**********************************************************************************
are you
a trend setter or or a trend follower?
These words have been rattling
around inside my head...
ever since my daughter said
"mom, you're such a copycat"...
There are a few out there that set  the trends
and
most of us  follow them.
I confess...I am a follower.

Take the new issue of Romantic Homes
for instance...
I saw the cover and loved it...

so I took the idea and made a few changes

changes that suit us

like pink candy corn and cinnamon bears

Then I added in some things I really love

and finished with this

I'm bringing this up because
there are so many wonderful ideas out there...
...some that I have been pondering for quite some time...
...waiting for me to get the courage to try...
and I feel it (the courage) coming.
If some of it ends up looking a little familiar,
Remember: Imitation is the highest form of flattery...
but I'm trying to give it my look...
as I get my wings it will become more and more me...

Thank you
so much for your kind words of encouragement
on my collage project!

You are giving me my wings...and I am flying high.
...know that I appreciate you all...
...even if I don't always say so...
I have so many plans...big plans...and they are keeping me busy...
now to land and finish the dishes...

********************************************
As I read this again
I can see how  in the past 2 years
I have
timidly stepped out,
been brave,
and
tried new things.
I really do feel as though I have found my wings.

But I DO still use your blogs, pinterest, and magazines
to gain inspiration.
I gather all of the ideas
looking for what I pin over and over.
I try to pin-point what it is that I am loving.

And then I step away,
turn off the computer
and listen to my heart.

"What do I have?
What do I really love?
What am I really trying to accomplish?"

And I still quote
Cindy from Cottage Instincts:
What likes am I willing to give up
so
that I can keep that which  I love?

Just some ramblings for the day...I don't really have an
answer for the debate.
***
These 2 photos show how my photo editing has changed.
Which do you prefer?

2010

2012

All  of that said...I am so close to being ready
to show  you my  kitchen makeover...I am lovin' it!

What a great post! I think we all do a little of both. We borrow ideas and make them our own. You have a distinct and beautiful style that is all you, a little shabby...a little romantic...cottagey english garden too. I think that even the greatest artists will tell you that other artists inspired them.
I love the second photo editing job...
♥happy v day!

Beautiful display! I DO gather inspiration from magazines, and blogs. Then I remember those images, pull out my stuff from home, and see if I can make my own idea from that. I think it is a work of art and of our own self-expression to make something our own.
Happy Valentine's Day!!

xoxo...Gloria

Can't wait to see your kitchen makeover.... And as for following etc....I think we are all followers in some way. Just all depends where the cycle is when someone pays attention to what you are doing. I often see vignettes or styles months or years after I have been doing the very same thing! I say to my husband just look at this and he says oh you are such a trendsetter....:) Of course we are all influenced by everything around us unless we walk around with blinkers on....keep on keeping on. Thanks for sharing.

I love everything you do....your posts' and picture's......your blog is one of the first on my list to check each day....as it always brings a smile to my face........thank you.....

It is definetly you! There's nothing wrong with taking an idea and making it yours...I think most of us do. As for which look I like best (of your photo editing) I like the softer looking picture better than the harsher one, it's very pretty and more soothing to the eye.

LOVE the bottom photo of course, where do you do your photo editing? always love your gorgeous photos! wow, can't wait to see your kitchen!

I do like the softness to your photo edits, but I do wonder---could your house really be all that white with the brown/beige accents. So when I see some true colors it's fun to see and then I realize you've been playng (beautifully) with your photos! Can't wait to see your kitchen--whatever way you show it!

I think we all get inspired by others and then put our own spin on it. Wasn't it King Solomon who said there is nothing new under the sun? I mean, I really wish I had been the first person to think of using vintage sheet music for altered art, but...well, you get it. And I love the first photo editing job. The second is more artsy, but I like less processing personally. :-)

Hi Rene ~ we all imitate things to a certain point and I do think that imitation is the highest form of flattery...that being said, we can all add our own twists to other people's inspirations and that makes it our own. You do a fantastic job with everything you do. Your home looks so unique, nothing looks "copied" to me! About your photo edits...I have been following your blog for quite some time and am used to the way you edit your photos, so I actually like the "new" look that shows more of the "real" color. Does that make sense!? It's refreshing change! Happy Valentine's Day! xo

I agree 100%.We all borrow ideas from each other, magazines, blogs, shops, flea market set ups what ever. They all inspire us.I take it as a HUGE compliment if someone loves what I do and they want to "Borrow" my idea.Your photos are lovely.I really love both photos but that vintage look is so charming.Have a wonderful Valentines day.

Yes, I agree. We share ideas and we borrow ideas to make them our own...isn't that what blogging and following blogs is all about? I pin things on Pinterest but I don't go to it for ideas. I'm too busy reading blogs! lol
I love both photos...I like to see colors and contrasts. It gives me a better idea of what I'm looking at and maybe borrow an idea or two ;)

Do you ever have a moment when something clicks...(to borrow from Oprah who borrowed it from science)...an aha moment?
I just did from reading your post. It's a tightrope, but with the help of a pole and chair...totally doable. When we use Pinterest to inspire us, challenge us, and dare us it is a wonderful thing. That's what it was created for.
Unique very rarely can be duplicated...copied, but never duplicated. When it is possessed, it's just as much a part of us as our fingerprints. I can recognize your home on Pinterest (without watermarks, etc. because it is you, your "voice", your fingerprints slapped all over it.
Trying on someone's style is just like trying on a bra. If it's uncomfortable and ill-fitting...we just don't buy it. Worse yet, is stuffing it with kleenex trying to make it fit and then pass it off as ours. It just never looks as good as the real McCoy.
Law, but I can be windy!
I just wanted to say thank you. I think you have settled the debate...at least for me.
Copying for one's own pleasure...good!
Copying for monetary gain at another's expense...bad!
Deb
P.S. Don't make me choose between the photos. Look how long it took for me just to leave the comment on Pinterest Debate of 2012!

Ideas be they ours or inspired by someone else have been with us since we began.
If you love it then it should be shared, putting your own spin on it makes it all the more treasured.
Happy Valentine's Day Hun! (I know I've seen that somewhere before)

We all feed off each other for our inspirations and make them our own. Some get expanded on that they become original ideas and some take it to the next level of a project. Happy Valentine's Day

I have so many ideas rattling around my head Rene, and I know many of them come from magazines I have seen over the years and others from blogs I love. I am always confused about style, but right now I love what I live with. I think all of us follow to some extent and then put our own twist to it. And that is something you have made into an art-form : ) my dear.
Gosh all this candy makes me want to run to the store for some pretty
jelly beans.
hugs from here...

Hi, My two cents worth is that I believe that we all are inspired by everything around us, sight, touch, smell, colors, etc. I know I am. This was truly a great post and thought there would be so many comments. Everyone must be pinning today! Love 2012 for the extra texture in the frame and table top, it pops so much more. My own take is that sometimes there is way too much inspiration on the internet, the social media sites. It is then that I need fresh air/space and quiet time to clear my head and mind and find my own essence again. Like all of life, Pinterest is just another outlet or escape. It can be positve or negative and it is up to each of us to decide what fills our minds/hearts and souls and overflows to others. Blessings.

I think we all draw inspiration from others. What I try to do is to make it my own. I just love your beautiful style. I like both your photos.

Inspiration in everywhere and it's impossible not to take some of it in! Love all the red candy sweets. Hope you had an amazing Valentines Day

Lily's Lace said...

Ditto to what Linsey said! We all look at magazines and online sites so what's the difference? I have read so many posts about Pinterest, some are angry, some don't care. I guess once you put what you have put your creations online I don't think there's any way to prevent from having your ideas stolen which is sad.

I pin other people's creations but if I ever "copy" everything it's always with my own twist to it just like you did! I don't think there will EVER be an answer that will please everyone! However I loved your post!! xoxox-cindy

I too think we all do a little of both. I tend not to copy what others do but use their ideas to ignite my creative spirit, when it's not self igniting! Love your vignette - both times.

I am certainly a follower and get some of the best ideas from blogs like yours. You are an inspiration.

I like the first picture you did as it has a softer look that I like.

I think it is a wonderful thing to be inspired to do "good" things from others ideas. I just found your blog and I love your recreation of ideas you have found. I am going to follow along. Feel welcome to stop by and follow along with me too. Blessings and keep on recreating! I love the Scripture!!!!
