why do we love white?

"White...is not a mere absence of colour;

it is a shining and affirmative thing,

 as fierce as red,

 as definite as black...

God paints in many colours; but He never paints so

gorgeously, I had almost said so gaudily,

as when He paints in white."

 -- G. K. Chesterton

White is capable of endless subtleties; ever fresh, ever responsive, it is the only color that can fill the whole house with beauty without becoming irritating, strident, or tiresome.

To decorate a house of a room with white
means that we exchange
a range of colors for a palette of subtleties
a spectrum of refinements.

The absence of color in white not only  makes us focus on variations in tone, it increases our awareness of differences  in texture ~ rough, smooth, substantial and fragile, shiny and matte ~ on the light and shadow that play on every surface.

White is an invitation for us to extend our imagination, to reconsider outworn rules, to capture the delicate, to perpetuate the illusive, to step into privacy and calm,
a world of our own invention.

We've been talking about white over here.
A lot.
I used to be a girl that liked  a lot of color...dark colors.
White was just an accent.
Now, I prefer  more, much more,  the simplicity of  white

White cheers me up, it calms me down,
it is peaceful and serene,
it is uncluttered,
it lets my chosen accents be seen.

That is why I love white.
How about you?

Your home is so serene, peaceful and touches of beauty everywhere. Even your laundry room is beautiful! I don't think I have ever had a pretty laundry room but I feel the inspiration now.

Beautiful pictures. I so agree that white is not the absence of color, it can be so much more. It is more about texture and warmth or coldness. I just love how it makes me feel when I see my own home or someone elses' home and it is filled with white.

Beautiful pictures . Thanks for sharing. I love it all, I was all prim, but as I get older, I am decluttering and find I like the looks of more white and softer colors in my home. Love the whites. Have a great evening.

Rene, I agree. When I first started my business I decided I was going to specialize in painted furniture, mostly tones of white. Doubters told me I was going to be out of business fast, that was 15 years ago. Now is even more popular than ever for what I'm so thankful. I have gone monochromatic, totally. When I need color I sit in my porch which is done in red, pink, yellow and green. I love the serenity, the calm feeling of it. Love all your whites, specially the breadboard wall behind your bed. Blessings, Marta.

You're killing me here! I love your take on white...so beautiful and clean and yet cozy like grandma's house. I have grandma's house too, so that isn't a bad thing, in my humble opinion, but I like your serene whites so much! They are sentimental without being too sweet, clean without being sterile, and the perfect amount of (my terminology here)"cozy clutter". Not truly cluttered, but neat things to look at. LOVE IT sweet Rene'. Magnificent post.

Hugs,
Judy

OOOOOOHH! What a great post! YES! Every word is so true! I have been going wild in the house this week painting hot pink in almost every room! I am LOVING it! The entrance is HOT PINK as well as the bathroom now. We are building a new little home that we will be moving in to in the fall. So I am going wild in the home we are in because it is temporary. I love pink VERY much! But... In the new home i wi ll be decorating in whites mainly with soft pink accents. Because I will not tire of the white.
Have a pretty day!

I love your home with it's peaceful tones of white. Personally I like a little warm colour for warmth due to our long, dark and cold winters but I have been adding some white decorative touches to lighten it up especially in winter. Your home is very beautiful and I love the laundry area! Have a great day!

Love, love, love your home. In fact, your blog inspired me to go with the more neutral combinations of white and shades of white, linen, off white etc. Especially during the hot, humid Florida coastal summers here, our living/dinning room seem so refreshing to be in with more white. Thank you for stopping by my blog. The sunrise service was beautiful indeed. Blessings.

My home is decorated in white, too. Not as beautiful as your's, though.

My cousin said she read somewhere that decorating with white is symbolic of a desire for peace, purity, and serenity. Yes, that perfectly describes the desire of my heart.

I love the bedroom and the piano. You are just gifted!!

You know, I have been giving this a lot of thought lately with my own decorating style (and mentioned in my latest blog post). I try other decorating touches but I keep coming back to white. At the moment I am thinking of selling off a lot of my larger items and starting afresh with a white palette. Your blog post has really helped!

Nothing as serene as the color white. I love all shades (view my profile). I have much to learn about blogging, but visiting your site gives me a sense of peace. We share much in common. You are truly an inspiration!

I just found your site and have been reading your posts. I love them! I have to say that I have felt the same way about white. I find myself so drawn to it in pictures and stores but can't imagine my own home that way but your "why do we love white" may have just changed my mind. Anyone who has lived in a lot of rentals has this built hate of white. But now there are so many shades of white that its not the same. I was going to go with a light lavendar but I think I've just made up my mind to go white! Thanks! I will keep reading your past posts and anything in the future! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!!
